Printer Trouble? Online Project Management Tools Can Help

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Getting a printer to print is just one of the many office equipment hassles we have to deal with in the workplace. Thankfully, many offices these days actually operate mostly online, using email and file sharing to disseminate information rather than the ol’ “hard copy”. Using an online project management tool like SantexQ also saves you the hassle of printing documents and wasting paper. Because all the information is easily accessible by team members online, you don’t need to print things out in order for everyone to get a copy.

So be smart, go green and go online! And remember to ask yourself- hopefully before you delve into the treacherous realms of evil uncooperative printer land - do I really need to print this?

Top 10 Office Phrases I Will Hear in a Week

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Much like David Letterman’s top 10 list, I have decided to put together a top ten list of most commonly heard office phrases heard around SantexQ headquarters. Perhaps it will give you a taste of what it’s like to work here, perhaps not. The only thing I know is that our online project management tool keeps us organized amongst the chaos of office life! Without further ado, here are the top ten office phrases I will hear in a week:

10. Oh look, another ‘Space Available’ sign is up.
9. I am just going to be in here cranking away…
8. Edit Undo, Edit Undo!
7. Oh what is that on my desktop!? Oh come on you guys!
6. Dude, can you turn down the volume
5. I forgot to clock out…
4. It’s an “off” day (Monday)
3. Do you know how to fax this?
2. Where should we go for lunch?

And the number one office quote is…

1. Tell them I am in a meeting

Do you have any typical office shouts you hear every week? Share them in the comments! :P

Project Management - For Xbox?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Not quite. But there is an online game that you can play that parallels the full video gamer experience. It’s called Sharkworld and it is a virtual project management world where you have to take on a project, chat up the boss and avoid major project management pitfalls. This really takes online project management tools to the next level.

From the site:

“Sharkworld allows aspiring project managers to experiment and gain experience with key aspects of project management in a highly entertaining and motivating setting.

This online game creates a convincing virtual environment in which a project is developed in real time, urging the management trainee to interfere when things go wrong, or preferably, before they do.

Several suspense scenarios increase the entertainment value of the game. The game covers not only economic aspects, but also social aspects, conflict management and diplomatic skills. Interaction takes place in real life, by real life means.

The game interacts with the player in many different ways: through websites - both fictional and real, cutscenes, email, newspaper articles, chat, sms and written letters.”

This could be a good exercise for an aspiring project manager or a friendly test for the PM expert. Think you’re up to the challenge? Play the game.

Project Management Joke

Monday, March 16th, 2009

In this blog we discuss the importance of project managers and outline the positive characteristics that it takes to be an effective manager. One characteristic that you won’t find in any PM book/guide or in any online project management tool is having a good sense of humor, specifically not only being able to laugh, but being able to laugh at yourself. It’s a good thing to have a sense of humor about yourself.

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts: “Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?”

The man below says: “Yes, you’re in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.”

You must be an engineer” says the balloonist.

“I am” replies the man. “How did you know.”

“Well,” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but it’s no use to anyone.”

The man below says “you must be in management.”

“I am” replies the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” says the man, “you don’t know where you are, or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help.  You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”
